Uttarkashi Flash Flood: Rescue Operations Intensify as 60 Feared Missing in Dharali

Published on

Dehradun: Torrential rain continued to lash Uttarkashi on Wednesday as rescue teams pushed forward with operations in Dharali village, which was severely hit by a devastating flash flood triggered by a cloudburst. The calamity struck on Tuesday afternoon, reducing nearly half of the scenic village to rubble.

Dharali, a key stop on the route to Gangotri, witnessed destruction on an unprecedented scale. As of Wednesday morning, four deaths have been confirmed, and around 130 people have been evacuated to safer areas.

Massive Search Underway for Dozens Missing in Dharali

Search teams have not yet been able to retrieve any bodies from the wreckage, and at least 60 people are still feared missing. However, officials suggest the actual number could be much higher, as a large crowd had gathered for the ‘Har Dudh Mela’ when disaster struck.

Among the missing are 11 Indian Army soldiers, according to Defence spokesperson Lt. Col. Manish Shrivastava. Despite suffering losses—including missing personnel and a damaged base—the Indian Army has mounted a large-scale rescue mission.

Army Deploys Helicopters and Special Teams

The Army has deployed MI-17 and Chinook helicopters to support aerial rescue and search efforts. Colonel Harshvardhan, Commanding Officer of the 14 Rajputana Rifles, is personally leading a 150-member rescue team in the affected zone.

Lt. Col. Shrivastava commended the soldiers for continuing their mission with unwavering courage and dedication, despite personal and logistical setbacks.
