Male (Maldives): Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in the Maldives today for a two-day State visit, marking his first official visit to the island nation since President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu took office in November 2023. This high-level engagement coincides with the 60th anniversary of India-Maldives diplomatic relations and the 60th Independence Day of the Maldives.

Maldives Welcomes PM Modi with Grand Preparations

The capital city Male is decked with Indian national flags and welcome banners, creating a festive atmosphere ahead of the Prime Minister’s arrival.

During the visit, PM Modi and President Muizzu will jointly review progress on the India-Maldives ‘Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership’, a key pillar of strategic cooperation between the two nations.

Meetings and MoUs on the Agenda

PM Modi is scheduled to hold discussions with other Maldivian leaders on key bilateral issues. The visit is expected to witness the signing of multiple MoUs and agreements in various areas of cooperation, as well as the inauguration of important infrastructure projects.

Guest of Honour at Maldives’ 60th Independence Day

Tomorrow, Prime Minister Modi will be the ‘Guest of Honour’ at the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day celebrations, symbolizing the strong diplomatic bond between the two neighbours.

G. Balasubramanian, India’s High Commissioner to the Maldives, emphasized India’s pivotal role in Maldives’ developmental journey. He also noted that PM Modi is the first foreign head of state to pay a state visit under President Muizzu’s administration.

This is PM Modi’s third visit to the Maldives as Prime Minister, and it is expected to significantly bolster the strategic, economic, and cultural ties between the two countries.
