Puri Horror: 16-Year-Old Girl Set Ablaze by Miscreants, Politicians Demand Swift Action

Published on

Puri: In a deeply disturbing incident, a 16-year-old minor girl was set on fire by miscreants in Bayabari village under the Balanga police station, part of Nimapada block in Puri district. The attack, which occurred on Saturday morning, has sparked widespread condemnation from politicians, bureaucrats, and citizens alike.

The victim, who suffered severe burn injuries, has been shifted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar for urgent medical care. Authorities confirmed that the state government and district administration will bear all medical expenses.

District Collector, Deputy CM Respond Swiftly

Puri District Magistrate Chanchal Rana, speaking to ANI, confirmed the incident and stated that trauma and emergency services have been arranged at AIIMS.

“We contacted AIIMS and trauma and emergency care arrangements have been made. The administration is fully supporting the victim’s treatment. Police are investigating the matter,” said Rana.

Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida expressed shock and anguish over the brutal attack:

“I am shocked and saddened to hear the news… All medical expenses will be borne by the government. Police have been instructed to arrest the culprits immediately and ensure strict action,” she said in a statement.

BJD Women’s Wing Holds Protest, Slams Inaction

Meanwhile, the BJD Women’s Wing staged a protest outside the Odisha State Women’s Commission office, demanding the immediate appointment of a Chairperson, a post that has been lying vacant for over a year.

BJD leader Ipsita Sahoo said,

“Three men set a girl on fire in the Deputy CM’s own constituency in broad daylight. Law and order for women in Odisha has deteriorated. We demand the urgent appointment of a Women’s Commission Chairperson.”

Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik Strongly Condemns Incident

Former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik expressed deep concern over the repeated incidents of violence against women in Odisha. Taking to his X (formerly Twitter) handle, he wrote:

“Deeply anguished to know that a young girl was set on fire in Puri district. This horrifying act, just days after the FM College self-immolation case and the Gopalpur assault, reflects a pattern of systemic failure.”

He further criticized the state government’s inaction, adding:

“Such repeated acts of violence show criminals feel emboldened under the current administration. The state is becoming unsafe for women. Will the government finally take action and ensure safety for Odisha’s daughters?”

Growing Demands for Accountability

This shocking crime has not only triggered political reactions but also sparked public outrage. Citizens, women’s groups, and human rights organizations are demanding swift arrests, speedy trials, and institutional reforms to address the recurring cases of violence against women in the state.
