CHAIBASA: Senior Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, is expected to appear before the MP-MLA Court in Chaibasa today in connection with a 2018 defamation case involving Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Court Appearance Scheduled for Wednesday Morning
According to local administration, Rahul Gandhi’s helicopter will land at Tata College Ground around 10 am, and he is expected to appear in court around 10:40 am. After the court proceedings, he will return to Ranchi the same day.
Sandeep Anurag Topno, Sub-Divisional Officer (Sadar), said:
“We’ve made adequate security arrangements across the district to maintain law and order.”
Background of the Case
The defamation case was filed by a local resident, Pratap Kumar, over remarks made by Gandhi during a rally in Chaibasa in 2018. Kumar alleged that Rahul Gandhi’s statements were defamatory and aimed at maligning the stature of Amit Shah.
After a special court in Chaibasa directed Rahul to appear on June 26, his legal counsel approached the Jharkhand High Court, citing unavailability on that date. The court allowed rescheduling and granted the new appearance date of August 7.
Gandhi’s Visit to Jharkhand for Shibu Soren’s Funeral
Gandhi had already arrived in Jharkhand on Tuesday (Aug 6) to pay his last respects to veteran tribal leader and former CM Shibu Soren, who passed away recently. Despite inclement weather delaying his visit, Rahul and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge reached Soren’s ancestral village Nemra by road and offered condolences to Hemant Soren and his family.
In a heartfelt tribute posted on X (formerly Twitter), Rahul wrote:
“Last Johar, Dishom Guru Shibu Soren ji. You were a staunch protector of tribal identity and water, forest and land… Your resolve like that of Dharti Aaba will always remain alive in our songs, our soil and our thoughts.”
In anticipation of Gandhi’s court appearance, the West Singhbhum district administration has intensified security in Chaibasa. Police personnel have been deployed at all key locations, and the court premises are under strict surveillance to prevent any untoward incidents.
Rahul Gandhi’s legal team is expected to present their argument before the MP-MLA Court later today. The outcome may have significant political implications, especially with the ongoing Lok Sabha session and upcoming state elections in various parts of the country.
