Published on

New Delhi: Union Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah has reaffirmed the government’s resolve to turn cooperatives into dynamic business entities, playing a transformative role in rural and agricultural development. Speaking at the second meeting of the Consultative Committee of his ministry, Mr. Shah revealed that over 35,000 new multipurpose cooperative societies have been established under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as part of a broader plan to create two lakh such societies within five years.

The minister emphasized that the cooperative sector holds immense potential to uplift the landless and underprivileged, by generating employment and supporting rural livelihoods.

Cooperative Sector Development and National Cooperative Policy-2025

Highlighting recent advancements, Mr. Shah announced that three new national-level cooperative societies have already been formed to enhance the prosperity of agriculture, farmers, and the broader cooperative ecosystem.

He also urged all members of the consultative committee to strengthen the dairy sector in their respective states, as it remains a key pillar of cooperative growth.

In the past four years, the Ministry of Cooperation has taken more than 100 initiatives to revamp:

  • Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS)
  • Dairy and fisheries cooperatives
  • Cooperative banks
  • Sugar cooperatives
  • Governance mechanisms across the cooperative sector

Mr. Shah further stated that the upcoming National Cooperative Policy-2025 will provide a detailed blueprint for achieving sustainable and inclusive cooperative development across India.

The meeting was also attended by Union Ministers of State for Cooperation, Krishan Pal and Murlidhar Mohol.
