Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’ in Bihar Targets Alleged Vote Theft and SIR Process

Published on

Congress leader and MP Rahul Gandhi will embark on a 13-day ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’ across Bihar to protest alleged vote theft and the Special Intensive Review (SIR) of the voter list conducted by the Election Commission of India (ECI) in the poll-bound state. The yatra will begin with a grand rally in Sasaram on August 17 and conclude in Arrah on August 30.

Congress general secretary (organisation) KC Venugopal announced the route, which will pass through major cities including Gaya, Munger, Bhagalpur, Katihar, Purnia, Madhubani, Darbhanga, and Pashchim Champaran. He said, “To save our vote, our Constitution, and our democracy, Rahul Gandhi, former Bihar deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav, and other Mahagathbandhan leaders will take this yatra across Bihar.”

Purpose and Message of the Rahul Gandhi Voter Adhikar Yatra

The Congress claims the SIR process is part of a conspiracy to manipulate electoral rolls and disenfranchise voters. Venugopal asserted that those involved in “stealing votes” and undermining democracy would be “punished by the people.”

On August 7, Gandhi produced what he called evidence of “stolen votes” from the Mahadevapura segment of Bangalore (Central) Lok Sabha constituency, alleging that 1,00,250 votes were manipulated to favour the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the 2024 elections. He claimed the list included 11,965 duplicate voters, 40,009 voters with fake or invalid addresses, 10,452 bulk voters registered at the same address, and 4,132 voters with invalid photos.

The Congress alleges the ECI has acted in collusion with the BJP and that the SIR process in Bihar is another attempt to “snatch power from ordinary people” and hand it to divisive forces and cronies.

Events Planned During the Rahul Gandhi Voter Adhikar Yatra

Alongside the Bihar yatra, the Congress will organise a ‘Save Democracy Torch Procession’ in all district headquarters nationwide on August 15.

On September 1, a massive ‘Mega Voter Adhikar Rally’ will be held at Patna’s Gandhi Maidan, where Venugopal said, “the whole of Bihar will send a clear message to drive away the Vote Chors (thieves).”

Between August 22 and September 7, rallies under the slogan ‘Vote Thief – Leave the Throne’ will be staged in all state headquarters. From September 15 to October 15, the party will carry out a nationwide signature campaign to “protect the right to vote.”

This marks Rahul Gandhi’s second major yatra in two years. In February 2024, he led Phase 2 of the Bharat Jodo Yatra, which revitalised the Congress organisation in several regions and contributed to electoral gains in the last general elections.
