Ranchi‑bound Air India Express Flight Returns to Delhi After Mid‑air Technical Issue

Published on

On Monday evening, Air India Express flight IX 1113, a Boeing 737 MAX 8 bound for Ranchi, was forced to return to Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport due to a suspected in-flight technical glitch. The flight had taken off around 4:40 pm from Delhi and was scheduled to land at Ranchi’s Birsa Munda Airport by 6:20 pm.

Ground Checks Cleared Before Resuming Service

Following immediate inspection and technical checks, the aircraft was cleared, and later resumed its scheduled service around 7:30 pm, according to Air India Express officials .

This marks the fourth mid-air emergency involving flights within the past 36 hours, all traced to suspected technical issues. Recent incidents include:

  1. AI Express IX 1113 (Delhi–Ranchi) – returned mid-air.
  2. Air India AI 819 (Delhi–Vadodara) – diverted after takeoff.
  3. AI 315 Dreamliner (Hong Kong–Delhi) – diverted back.
  4. LX/LH and F-35 – involving Lufthansa and a British fighter jet

These repeated incidents are heightening concerns over aircraft maintenance protocols and operational safety, especially following the recent crash of Air India flight AI 171 in Ahmedabad.

Amid this escalation of in-flight emergencies, the DGCA has mandated enhanced safety inspections for Air India’s Boeing fleets. Air India Express affirmed that post-incident inspections are completed before resuming flights, as stated by their spokesperson: “One of our flights returned to Delhi after takeoff due to a suspected technical issue. Post inspections and clearance, the aircraft continued scheduled operations.”

What This Means for Passengers

While all passengers safely landed, the recurrence of such incidents raises questions about aviation safety standards and may prompt both airlines and regulators to adopt stricter maintenance oversight in the days ahead.
