Rayagada: A shocking murder in Rayagada has triggered panic after a youth who was abducted during a late-night firing incident was found dead near the Nagavali River on Sunday morning. The victim, identified as Nikhil Hadipa from Reli Sahi, was allegedly chased, attacked and forcibly taken away by a group of assailants before his body was recovered hours later.

The incident has raised fresh concerns over escalating gang-style violence and the growing use of firearms in local disputes in southern Odisha.

Rayagada Youth Murder Followed Late-Night Chase and Firing

According to preliminary police findings, the attack took place around 10 p.m. on Saturday at Indira Nagar 3rd Line in Rayagada town.

Witnesses told investigators that several youths arrived on a motorcycle and a four-wheeler before chasing Nikhil through the locality. During the confrontation, shots were allegedly fired as the victim tried to flee.

Nikhil reportedly rushed into a nearby house seeking protection. However, the attackers allegedly dragged him out and abducted him before escaping toward the Ring Road area.

His body was later found near the Nagavali River at Tumbiguda early Sunday morning.

Police Recover Evidence Near Nagavali River

A scientific investigation team reached the crime scene soon after the body was discovered and began collecting forensic evidence.

Police recovered a used cartridge case from the area, strengthening suspicions that firearms were used during the attack.

Investigators are now examining CCTV footage, local witness accounts and possible movement routes used by the suspects after the abduction.

The recovery of forensic evidence at an early stage could become critical in tracing the attackers and establishing the sequence of events leading to the murder.

Previous Enmity Emerges as Possible Motive

Police sources indicated that earlier rivalry or personal enmity may have triggered the killing, though officials said all possible angles are being examined.

The second-order effect of such incidents is often wider public fear and declining confidence in local law enforcement, especially when crimes involve organized groups operating openly in residential areas.

The murder has also intensified concerns over illegal firearm access and retaliatory violence among youth groups in smaller towns.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the number of accused involved, and no arrests had been officially announced at the time of reporting.
