Rohit Sharma Becomes World’s No. 1 ODI Batter at 38

Published on

Former India captain Rohit Sharma etched his name in cricketing history on Wednesday (October 29) by becoming the oldest Indian cricketer to achieve the world’s No. 1 ODI batter ranking. At 38 years and 182 days, the veteran opener from Mumbai climbed two spots to secure the top position in the ICC ODI batter’s rankings for the first time in his career, overtaking India’s skipper Shubman Gill.

Rohit Sharma Surpasses Gill to Become No. 1

Rohit, who had 745 rating points last week, delivered two stellar performances in the recent India-Australia ODI series. He scored 73 runs off 97 balls in the second ODI at Adelaide Oval on October 23 and followed it up with an unbeaten 121 off 125 balls in the third ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground on October 25. These innings boosted his tally to 781 rating points, propelling him to the No. 1 spot.

The Indian opener now joins an elite list of Indian batters — Sachin Tendulkar, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Shubman Gill — who have previously held the top ODI ranking.

Gill and Kohli Drop in ICC Rankings

Shubman Gill, who had been occupying the No. 1 spot, slipped to third position after a poor run in the Australia series where he managed scores of 10, 9, and 24. Batting legend Virat Kohli, despite scoring 74 runs in the third ODI, dropped one place to sixth with 725 rating points.

Middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer, meanwhile, climbed one spot to 9th after scoring a half-century in the second ODI at Adelaide Oval.

Bowling Rankings: Hazlewood and Zampa Rise, Kuldeep Slips

In the ICC ODI bowler’s rankings, Australian pacer Josh Hazlewood moved up two places to eighth, while India’s Kuldeep Yadav slipped from sixth to seventh. Spinner Adam Zampa’s four-wicket haul in the second ODI helped him jump two places to 12th.

New Zealand’s white-ball captain Mitchell Santner also made significant progress, moving up three places to claim the fourth position among ODI bowlers.
