Russia Becomes First Country to Officially Recognize Taliban Government in Afghanistan

Published on

In a significant diplomatic development, Russia has become the first country to officially recognize the Taliban-led government in Afghanistan. The announcement was made following a meeting between Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi and Russia’s Ambassador to Kabul, Dmitry Zhirnov.

Recognition Sparks Momentum for Wider Acceptance

Calling it a “brave decision,” Muttaqi praised Russia for taking the lead in recognizing the Islamic Emirate. “This brave decision will be an example for others… Now that the process of recognition has started, Russia was ahead of everyone,” he said in a video shared on social media.

Confirmation from Russian Officials

Zamir Kabulov, Moscow’s special representative for Afghanistan, confirmed to state news agency Ria Novosti that the Russian government has officially recognized the Taliban administration. Russia’s Foreign Ministry also confirmed the move to the TASS news agency.

Other Countries Maintain Informal Relations

While countries like China and Pakistan host Taliban-appointed ambassadors, they have not formally recognized the Taliban regime. Russia’s formal recognition marks a major step, as most of the international community has so far withheld official recognition since the Taliban took power in August 2021.
