Sambalpur: Railway police in Sambalpur have arrested a 21-year-old man accused of impersonating a railway employee and stealing mobile phones from passengers travelling on trains at night.
The accused has been identified as Dinesh Nag of Tora village in Bargarh district. Police allege that he had been using a fake railway identity for more than six months while travelling on trains and targeting passengers who were asleep.
Investigators traced him following complaints from passengers who reported missing mobile phones during their journeys.
Sambalpur Railway Police Arrest Accused at Bargarh Station
According to police, Nag mainly travelled at night on routes connecting Jharsuguda and Balangir.
He allegedly used the appearance of a railway employee to avoid suspicion while moving through coaches. Police said he would target sleeping passengers and allegedly remove phones from their pockets or bags.
One of the stolen phones was reportedly being used by the accused himself, which helped investigators pursue the case.
Police eventually arrested him at Bargarh railway station.
Sambalpur Railway Police Recover Fake Railway Equipment
The arrest led to the recovery of several items allegedly connected with the thefts and impersonation.
Police seized:
- 12 mobile phones suspected to be stolen
- A forged railway identity card
- A railway uniform
- A whistle
- A green railway flag
The recovery of the uniform and other railway-related items has added an impersonation angle to the investigation.
Railway Theft Case Under Further Investigation
A case has been registered under Sambalpur GRP Case No. 97/2026.
Investigators are now examining the recovered mobile phones and other evidence to establish their ownership and determine the full extent of the alleged thefts.
Police are also investigating whether Nag acted alone or had assistance from other people.
The case highlights a security concern for passengers travelling overnight, particularly those who sleep during journeys. Railway authorities generally rely on passenger vigilance alongside security measures, making it important for travellers to keep mobile phones, wallets and other valuables secured while resting.
The investigation will determine the next legal steps against the accused and whether additional arrests are required.
