Colombo: India finished the opening day of the second Test against Sri Lanka at 300/5, putting themselves in a strong position after choosing to bat first in Colombo.
The biggest contribution came from Devdutt Padikkal, who followed his outstanding performance in the first Test with another century. His 117 from 193 balls helped India recover from early setbacks and build a substantial first-innings platform.
India vs Sri Lanka 2nd Test: Padikkal Shines Again
Padikkal’s innings was the centrepiece of India’s batting effort. He struck 12 fours during his 193-ball stay and became a key figure in India’s recovery after the early wickets.
Captain Shubman Gill also made an important contribution, scoring 50. Yashasvi Jaiswal added 45, while Ravindra Jadeja made 43 before being dismissed late in the day.
Padikkal’s form has become one of the major talking points of the series. He had already scored 167 in the first Test at Galle, meaning his back-to-back centuries have given India valuable stability at the top of the order.
India vs Sri Lanka 2nd Test: Fernando Keeps Sri Lanka Alive
Sri Lanka did manage to prevent India from completely dominating the opening day.
Fast bowler Asitha Fernando claimed three wickets, providing the hosts with their biggest breakthrough whenever India’s batting threatened to take complete control. India ended the day at 300/5 after 85 overs.
Dhruv Jurel was unbeaten on 7, while debutant Saransh Jain was not out on 4 when play ended.
India vs Sri Lanka 2nd Test: WTC Stakes
India entered the second Test with a 1-0 lead after winning the opening match in Galle by 165 runs. A victory in Colombo would give India a clean sweep of the two-Test series.
The match also carries significance for the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle. India are looking to strengthen their position in the points race, making the result more important than simply securing a series victory.
With five wickets still in hand and Jurel at the crease, India will look to convert its solid opening day into a much bigger first-innings total. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, will need early breakthroughs on Day 2 to prevent India from moving towards a commanding score.
The first session on Day 2 could therefore prove crucial. If India bat deep into the morning, Sri Lanka may face a long spell in the field, while early wickets could bring the hosts back into the contest.
