Shashi Tharoor Defends India’s Diplomatic Stand Amid Trump’s Ceasefire Claim, Rahul Gandhi Controversy

Published on

Diplomacy, like the proverbial iceberg, reveals only a fraction of its true nature — a sentiment aptly captured by Shashi Tharoor amid ongoing debate around former US President Donald Trump’s claim of mediating a ceasefire between India and Pakistan.

While Congress leader Rahul Gandhi recently accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of yielding to Trump’s alleged pressure post the Operation Sindoor strikes in May, senior Congress MP Tharoor, a former Under-Secretary-General at the UN, offered a measured diplomatic response during his visit to the United States.

Operation Sindoor and Trump’s Controversial Claim

India’s Operation Sindoor, carried out on May 7, was a decisive retaliatory strike on terror camps inside Pakistan and PoK, following missile and drone attacks by Pakistan. India’s official stance maintains that the ceasefire followed a direct DGMO-level communication between India and Pakistan, without any foreign intervention.

Yet, Trump’s claims — and Rahul Gandhi’s reiteration of them — stirred political controversy. Speaking in Bhopal on June 4, Gandhi dramatized events by saying, “Trump made one gesture from there, picked up the call and said ‘Modiji, what are you doing? Narender surrender’. And Modiji said ‘yes sir’.”

Tharoor Sets the Record Straight

Responding to questions in the US, Tharoor stated firmly, “We never asked anyone for mediation.” Without directly criticizing his party leader, Tharoor diplomatically dismissed the Trump remark as a “small matter” that doesn’t merit disruption of the India-US relationship.

“We have a valuable strategic partnership with Washington that we would not want to jeopardise over a matter of detail,” he said, adding that diplomacy must focus on future cooperation rather than egos.

Milind Deora Backs Tharoor’s Stance

Adding a layer of nuance, former Congress leader Milind Deora acknowledged Tharoor’s diplomatic finesse, saying, “He always puts country before party.” Deora’s remarks highlighted the growing divide within the Congress over how national security and diplomacy should be handled in public discourse.

National Unity Over Political Rhetoric

While opposition leaders like Asaduddin Owaisi have taken a hard stance on Pakistan after the Pahalgam attack, they have refrained from undermining India’s diplomatic narrative. Tharoor too, despite party politics, projected a unified voice, aligning with the government’s cautious stance on international matters.

India’s foreign policy, as Tharoor articulated, is grounded in mature diplomacy, not impulsive rebuttals. As the country seeks deeper engagement with the US on trade and security, voices like Tharoor’s offer a balanced path forward — one that rises above political jibes and keeps national interest at the forefront.
