Shubman Gill Shatters 148-Year Test Record, Breaks Gavaskar’s 54-Year-Old Mark

Edgbaston, Birmingham: Shubman Gill has etched his name into cricketing history with a sensational, record-breaking performance in the second Test against England at Edgbaston. The 25-year-old Indian skipper not only scored a maiden double century but followed it up with a century in the second innings, amassing a staggering 430 runs in a single Test — the most ever by an Indian and the second-highest overall in 148 years of Test cricket.

Gill’s numbers from the Edgbaston Test are monumental:

  • 269 (1st innings)
  • 161 (2nd innings)
  • Total: 430 runs

This tally surpasses Sunil Gavaskar’s 344 runs (Port of Spain, 1971), a record that had stood for 54 years. Gill is now only behind England’s Graham Gooch, who scored 456 runs against India in 1990.

Historic Firsts for Gill:

  • First batter in Test history to score a double century and 150+ in the same match.
  • First Indian captain to score a double century and a century in a single Test match.
  • First Asian captain to score a double century in a SENA country (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia).
  • Only the 9th player in Test history to achieve a 200+ and 100+ combo in one match.

Indian Captains With Hundreds in Both Innings of a Test:

  • Sunil Gavaskar vs WI (1978)
  • Virat Kohli vs AUS (2014)
  • Shubman Gill vs ENG (2025)

What makes this feat even more remarkable is that Gill wasn’t India’s initial choice for captaincy. With Rohit Sharma stepping away and Jasprit Bumrah considered next in line, Gill was a surprise selection. But the youngster has proved his mettle under pressure, rising to the challenge with fearless batting and calm leadership.

Gill now joins legends like Virat Kohli, Alastair Cook, Steven Smith, and Sunil Gavaskar as players who scored multiple hundreds in their first two Tests as captain. Only Kohli had scored three hundreds like Gill in that window.

Gill’s partnership with Ravindra Jadeja (203-run stand) and vital contributions from Yashasvi Jaiswal (87) and Kuldeep Yadav were key in taking India to a mammoth 587 in the first innings, turning around the match from a precarious 211/5.
