India Joins Historic 1000-Run Club in Tests, Sets New Record in IND vs ENG 2nd Test

Published on

In a landmark achievement, India became only the sixth team in Test cricket history — and the first from the country — to score over 1,000 runs in a single Test match. The historic feat came during the second Test against England at Edgbaston, where India posted a staggering total of 1,014 runs across two innings.

India’s first innings score of 587 all out followed by a 427/6 declared effort in the second innings not only set England a near-impossible fourth-innings target of 608 but also powered India into the exclusive “1000-club” of Test cricket.

The 1000-Run Club in Test Cricket History:

1121 – England vs West Indies, Kingston, 1930

1078 – Pakistan vs India, Faisalabad, 2006

1028 – Australia vs England, The Oval, 1934

1014 – India vs England, Edgbaston, 2025

1013 – Australia vs West Indies, Sydney, 1969

1011 – South Africa vs England, Durban, 1939

India Sets New Record for Most Runs in First Two Tests of a Series

With a cumulative 1,849 runs across the first two Tests of the series, India has now posted the highest team aggregate in the opening two matches of any Test series — a testament to their batting dominance and depth.

Captain Shubman Gill led from the front with a commanding 269 in the first inning and followed it up with 161 in the second. He was well supported by Ravindra Jadeja, who struck 89 and 69* in the two innings, and Washington Sundar with a gritty 42. Earlier contributions came from Yashasvi Jaiswal (87) and Karun Nair (31).

In the second innings, India went on the offensive, with Rishabh Pant (65) and KL Rahul (55) playing explosive cameos to accelerate the scoring and push past the 1000-run milestone before declaration.

Despite a valiant effort from England’s Harry Brook (158) and *Jamie Smith (184)**, whose 303-run stand brought England to 407 in the first innings, India wrested control with the ball. Mohammed Siraj (6/70) and Akash Deep (4/88) delivered timely breakthroughs with the second new ball to end the resistance.

Setting the Tone for a Memorable Series

India’s 608-run target for England is the second-highest they’ve ever set in a fourth innings and the second-highest target ever set against England on home soil. With history made and momentum firmly in their favour, India has announced its intentions loud and clear for the rest of the series.
