Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong will be on a three-day official visit to India from September 2, as both nations celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations. This marks Wong’s first visit to India in his capacity as Singapore’s Prime Minister. He will be accompanied by his spouse and a high-level delegation comprising Cabinet Ministers and senior officials.

During his visit, PM Wong will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on September 4 for bilateral discussions. Prime Minister Modi will also host a banquet lunch in his honor. In addition, Wong will call on President Droupadi Murmu and engage with top Indian leaders, including Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval.

Singapore PM Lawrence Wong’s visit highlights 60 years of diplomatic relations

India and Singapore elevated their ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Singapore in September 2024. Wong’s trip reaffirms the countries’ commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation. The visit also coincides with the diamond jubilee of their diplomatic relations, symbolizing six decades of mutual trust and collaboration.

Bilateral talks to focus on trade, sustainability, and connectivity

The two prime ministers are expected to review ongoing cooperation in areas such as sustainability, advanced manufacturing, and connectivity. Discussions will also cover new domains like cross-border data flows, electricity trade, and joint skills development programs. Regional and international issues of mutual interest will be on the agenda as well.

Recent progress in India-Singapore partnership

Last month, the third India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable was held in New Delhi, where both sides explored opportunities for collaboration in healthcare, digitalisation, skills training, and advanced manufacturing. Industry representatives also showed interest in establishing a semiconductor ecosystem between the two nations, further strengthening their technological cooperation.

High-level delegation joins Singapore PM in India

PM Wong will be accompanied by Foreign Affairs Minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow, and Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Trade and Industry Gan Siow Huang. The delegation will participate in high-level meetings, business engagements, and cultural interactions. Wong will also meet overseas Singaporeans and take part in a closed-door roundtable with Indian business leaders.
