  KEY TAKEAWAYS:
  • Two robbery suspects from Maharashtra were injured during a police encounter in Angul district.
  • Four accused have been arrested in connection with the Talcher refinery gold and silver loot case.
  • Police recovered firearms and a vehicle, while the search for another absconding suspect continues.

TALCHER: The Talcher gold refinery robbery investigation witnessed a major breakthrough after Odisha Police injured two suspects during an encounter near Handapa in Angul district. The operation came as law enforcement intensified efforts to recover stolen gold and silver allegedly looted from a refinery in Talcher.

Officials identified the injured accused as Sachin Gajge and Prakash Madane, both residents of Maharashtra. Police said the suspects suffered leg injuries during an exchange of fire and were later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for advanced treatment.

The development marks a significant step in the investigation into one of the region’s most high-profile robbery cases in recent months.

Talcher Gold Refinery Robbery: How Police Tracked the Accused

According to investigators, a group of five criminals allegedly targeted Sri Balaji Gold Refinery at Hatatota Chhak in Talcher and escaped with a substantial quantity of gold and silver. The refinery owner subsequently filed a complaint, triggering a large-scale manhunt.

Police teams tracked the suspects’ movements across multiple locations before locating them near Handapa. During the operation, officers reportedly came under gunfire from the fleeing accused. In response, police returned fire, resulting in injuries to two members of the gang.

Investigators believe the swift action prevented the suspects from escaping Odisha and helped authorities gather crucial leads about the robbery network.

Why This Encounter Matters for the Investigation

Beyond the arrests, the operation has highlighted the growing challenge posed by organized interstate criminal groups targeting high-value industrial establishments. The seizure of two country-made firearms and a vehicle allegedly used in the crime has provided investigators with additional evidence.

Police have already arrested four accused linked to the case, all reportedly from Maharashtra. Efforts are now focused on apprehending the remaining absconding suspect and recovering the stolen valuables.

The incident is also expected to prompt refinery operators and other businesses handling precious metals to review security measures. Investigators are examining whether the accused had prior knowledge of refinery operations and whether additional individuals may have assisted the gang before or after the robbery.

Authorities have registered a case and expanded the investigation to uncover the full scope of the criminal operation, while recovery efforts for the stolen gold and silver continue.
