Texas Floods Kill 43, Including 15 Children; Search for Survivors Continues
A massive rescue operation is underway in central Texas after deadly flash floods claimed the lives of 43 people, including 15 children, and left 27 children still missing. The catastrophe has primarily impacted areas along the Guadalupe River, where search and rescue teams are working tirelessly to locate survivors.
Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha assured the public that the efforts will persist until “everyone is found.” More than 850 people have been rescued so far as the disaster continues into its second night.
Christian Youth Camp Hit Hard
A significant portion of the search is focused on Camp Mystic, an all-girls Christian summer camp along the river. The camp had around 750 campers, and many of the 27 missing girls are believed to be under the age of 12.
According to Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, most of the devastation occurred early Friday when the river suddenly surged over 26 feet (8 meters), sweeping away tents, cabins, and belongings. Camp photos reveal scenes of destruction — muddy blankets, mattresses, and stuffed animals scattered across the grounds.
Camp Mystic has informed parents via email that if they haven’t received a direct update, their child is currently classified as missing.
Some parents have tragically confirmed their child’s death on social media. Survivors recounted horrifying moments, including families clinging to trees for safety as they waited for rescuers who couldn’t reach them in time.
Lorena Guillen, a local resident who lost her home and restaurant, described hearing the cries of a family being washed away near her property where several recreational vehicles had been parked.
At a press conference, Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced an expanded disaster declaration to support ongoing rescue operations. “We will stop when the job is completed,” he said.
President Donald Trump stated that his administration is coordinating closely with Texas officials, while Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed that the U.S. Coast Guard has been deployed to assist.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has warned of additional rainfall ranging from 2 to 5 inches, with some areas potentially seeing up to 10 inches over the weekend — raising fears of renewed flooding.
A special mass will be held at Notre Dame Catholic Church on Sunday to honor those who have died or remain missing, as families and communities grapple with the unfolding tragedy.
