Trump and Putin Hold First Alaska Summit, Aim for Ukraine Peace and Nuclear Deal

US President Donald Trump will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin today at the US Joint Military Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska. This will be their first face-to-face summit since Trump returned to the White House in January this year.

Speaking ahead of the talks, President Trump said he believes Vladimir Putin is ready to end the war in Ukraine, but cautioned that a full peace agreement would likely require a second round of talks involving Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. He added that the summit in Alaska is an important first step toward restoring broader stability in Europe and addressing key security concerns.

Meanwhile, President Putin held a high-level meeting at the Kremlin yesterday to review preparations for the summit. He stated that Moscow hopes to reach agreements that will create long-term conditions for peace between Russia and Ukraine, and foster greater stability across Europe.

Putin also suggested that Russia and the United States might reach a deal on nuclear arms control during the meeting in Alaska. He said that stability and predictability in nuclear deterrence would be a major step forward for global security.

Earlier, after holding a virtual consultation with European leaders, President Trump warned of “very severe consequences” if Russia refuses to move toward ending the war in Ukraine.
