Trump Announces Massive US-Pakistan Oil Deal, Imposes 25% Tariff on Indian Imports

Washington: In a double-edged announcement that could reshape the regional energy dynamics, former US President Donald Trump revealed a new oil partnership with Pakistan, while simultaneously declaring a 25% tariff and additional penalties on Indian imports effective August 1.

“We have just concluded a Deal with the Country of Pakistan, whereby Pakistan and the United States will work together on developing their massive Oil Reserves… Who knows, maybe they’ll be selling Oil to India someday!”

The former President confirmed that both countries are in the process of choosing a lead oil company for this joint venture, which he described as “massive.” The deal is seen as an attempt to revamp strategic economic ties with Pakistan amid increasing geopolitical maneuvering in the region.

Tariffs on Indian Imports

Earlier on the same day, Trump unveiled a 25% tariff hike on Indian goods, citing:

  • India’s growing trade surplus with the US
  • Continued Indian imports of Russian oil, despite Western sanctions

The announcement has stirred concerns in Indian trade circles and raised the possibility of retaliatory tariffs from New Delhi.

Trump’s Remarks Spark Regional Speculation

Trump’s offhand suggestion that Pakistan might one day export oil to India has drawn sharp reactions from policy experts in New Delhi. Many view it as a strategic provocation, especially given Pakistan’s track record of harbouring terror outfits and its rocky diplomatic history with India.

Trump further emphasized that many countries are currently offering the US tariff reduction proposals, as Washington continues to press for lower trade deficits.

Ministry of Commerce confirmed that the situation is being studied carefully, and appropriate countermeasures may be taken to safeguard national economic interests.

This move adds another layer of complexity to already tense Indo-US trade relations. As Trump continues to push his “America First” narrative, the new US-Pakistan oil collaboration and the steep tariffs on Indian imports signal a potential realignment of US energy and trade policy in South Asia.
