Tokyo, Japan: Typhoon Peipah made landfall in Wakayama Prefecture on Friday morning, bringing with it torrential rains and strong winds that pose serious risks of floods and landslides, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).
The 15th typhoon of the season, Peipah, first hit Kochi Prefecture on Shikoku island around 1 a.m. local time before moving east along the Pacific coast and making landfall again in northern Wakayama at around 9 a.m.
Typhoon Peipah Moves East Along Pacific Coast
The weather agency reported that Typhoon Peipah is currently moving eastward along Japan’s Pacific coastline. The storm is projected to reach the Kinki, Tokai, Kanto-Koshin, and Tohoku regions by Friday evening, potentially affecting millions of residents.
Heavy Rainfall Forecast Across Multiple Regions
According to JMA forecasts, the storm will bring widespread heavy rainfall through Saturday morning. Predictions include:
- Up to 300 mm of rain in the Kanto-Koshin region (including Tokyo)
- Around 250 mm in the Tokai region
- Nearly 150 mm in the Kinki region
Officials warn that such intense rainfall could result in overflowing rivers, flash floods, and waterlogging in low-lying areas.
Floods and Landslide Warnings Issued
The Japan Meteorological Agency has urged residents to remain on high alert for landslides, rising river levels, and severe flooding, especially across the Tohoku, Kanto-Koshin, Tokai, and Kinki regions.
Local governments are advising precautionary measures, including early evacuation from vulnerable areas, as the storm continues its path.

Emergency services are on standby, and authorities are monitoring transportation disruptions and potential damage to infrastructure. With Typhoon Peipah still intensifying, officials emphasized that the public should closely follow weather advisories and stay prepared for sudden emergencies.
