US Labels India’s Russian Oil Purchases a “Point of Irritation”: Secretary Marco Rubio
Washington: In a significant diplomatic development, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has described India’s continued purchase of discounted Russian oil as a “point of irritation” in the bilateral relationship between New Delhi and Washington.
The remarks come just a day after US President Donald Trump announced a 25% tariff on Indian imports and additional penalties targeting India’s energy and defence deals with Russia.
Speaking to Fox Radio, Secretary Rubio acknowledged India’s status as a strategic ally, but emphasized that the country’s energy trade with Russia undermines global efforts to isolate Moscow over the Ukraine conflict.
Key Highlights from Secretary Rubio’s Statement:
- India’s Russian oil imports are “helping to sustain Moscow’s war efforts in Ukraine,” Rubio said, adding that sanctioned oil is sold below global prices, which India continues to purchase.
- While acknowledging India’s growing energy needs, he noted that “there are many other oil vendors available.”
- The issue is not isolated: “We’re not going to align 100% of the time on everything,” Rubio added, hinting at broader complexities in the India-US strategic partnership.
“It is most certainly a point of irritation in our relationship with India — not the only point of irritation,” Rubio remarked.
India’s Position: Balancing Energy Security and Diplomacy
India has repeatedly defended its right to import energy based on national interest, especially from Russia, citing cost efficiency and domestic economic needs. The Indian government has maintained that its energy imports do not violate international sanctions, and are aimed at ensuring affordable access for its 1.4 billion citizens.
New Delhi has also taken steps to diversify its energy basket, with increasing imports from the US and Middle East. However, Russian oil still offers steep discounts, which have been vital in managing inflation and trade deficits.
What This Means for India-US Relations
Despite the ongoing friction, both nations continue to engage in multiple areas of cooperation — including defence, technology, counter-terrorism, and climate action.
Diplomatic analysts believe President Trump’s tariff move and accompanying rhetoric are part of a negotiation tactic ahead of high-stakes trade talks scheduled for mid-August.
The Indian government, while not officially responding to Rubio’s comments yet, has reiterated its commitment to protecting its sovereign decision-making on energy and security.
This development adds pressure on India’s diplomatic balancing act amid global geopolitical tensions, especially with the US, Russia, and its own domestic economic needs.
