USBRL Project Brings All-Weather Rail Connectivity to Kashmir with World-Class Safety Features

Published on

Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced the successful commissioning of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), describing it as one of India’s most technically complex and ecologically sensitive railway projects. Built across the challenging Himalayan terrain, the 272-kilometer line integrates global-standard safety protocols with minimal environmental disruption.

The rail link stretches through Udhampur, Reasi, Ramban, Anantnag, Pulwama, Budgam, Srinagar, and Baramulla districts. It features two engineering marvels: the world’s tallest railway bridge over the Chenab River (359 meters above the riverbed), and Indian Railways’ first-ever cable-stayed bridge over Anji Khad.

Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link to Drive Tourism and Employment

The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link has created over 5 crore man-days of employment and dramatically improved regional infrastructure with 215 km of approach roads, 320 bridges, and multiple tunnels. For passenger safety, 66 km of escape tunnels and advanced fire-fighting systems have been installed, along with mechanical ventilation in tunnels longer than 2 km.

According to Mr. Vaishnaw’s written statement in the Lok Sabha, slope stabilization technologies developed by IISc Bengaluru, IIT Delhi, and international experts were used to ensure environmental safety. The all-weather connectivity offered by USBRL is expected to significantly boost tourism, trade, and job opportunities in Jammu and Kashmir, providing a major push to the region’s socio-economic development.
