New Delhi: Indian Railways has successfully completed the final high-speed trial of the indigenously developed Vande Bharat Sleeper Train under the supervision of the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), marking a significant advancement in India’s rail modernisation efforts. The trial was conducted on the Kota–Nagda section, where the 16-coach sleeper train achieved a top speed of 180 kmph.
According to the Ministry of Railways, the CRS carried out an extensive technical evaluation during the trial, covering critical parameters such as ride stability, oscillation and vibration behaviour, braking and emergency braking systems, and the performance of onboard safety mechanisms. The train’s performance at high speed was found to be fully satisfactory, and the trial was formally declared successful.
Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw shared a video of the certification run on social media, showcasing the successful CRS-supervised trial and highlighting the progress made under India’s push for self-reliant rail technology.
Vande Bharat Sleeper Train CRS Trial Demonstrates High-Speed Stability
A key highlight of the trial was the water-glass stability demonstration, a widely recognised test to assess ride quality. In the video shared by the Railways Minister, glasses filled with water remained steady without spillage even at speeds of 180 kmph, underscoring the effectiveness of the train’s advanced suspension system and enhanced ride comfort.
Officials said the successful completion of this test reflects improvements in coach design, suspension, and overall train dynamics, making the sleeper variant suitable for long-distance, high-speed overnight travel.
Designed for Comfortable and Modern Long-Distance Travel
The Vande Bharat Sleeper Train has been specifically engineered to cater to long-haul journeys while offering modern passenger amenities. The train features comfortable sleeper berths, centrally controlled automatic doors, modern toilets, advanced suspension systems, fire detection and safety monitoring systems, CCTV-based surveillance, and digital passenger information systems.
Energy-efficient technologies have been incorporated across the rake to reduce operational costs and environmental impact. These features are aimed at delivering safer, smoother, and more comfortable overnight travel for passengers on busy intercity and long-distance routes.
Vande Bharat Sleeper Train CRS Trial Confirms Advanced Safety Systems
In terms of safety and indigenous technology, the train is equipped with the home-grown KAVACH train protection system. Additional safety features include crashworthy semi-permanent couplers with anti-climbing mechanisms and fire barrier doors installed at the ends of each coach.
Fire safety has been strengthened through aerosol-based fire detection and suppression systems fitted in electrical cabinets and lavatories. The rake also uses regenerative braking for improved energy efficiency, while air-conditioning units are equipped with UV-C lamp-based disinfection systems to enhance hygiene.

Passenger safety and convenience have been further improved with fully sealed wider gangways, CCTV cameras in all coaches, and an emergency talk-back system that enables direct communication with the train manager or loco pilot. Special lavatories for Divyangjan passengers have been provided in the driving coaches at both ends. A centralised coach monitoring system allows real-time tracking of amenities such as lighting and air-conditioning, while ergonomically designed ladders in sleeper coaches ensure easier access to upper berths.
Major Milestone for Indigenous Rail Manufacturing
The successful completion of the CRS high-speed trial marks a crucial technical milestone and clears the path for the introduction of Vande Bharat Sleeper services on Indian Railways. The Ministry of Railways said the achievement reflects a strong focus on innovation, passenger safety, and indigenous manufacturing, in line with the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.
With certification now in place, the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train is expected to play a key role in transforming long-distance rail travel in India by combining speed, comfort, and advanced safety features
