Vedanta to Invest ₹1 Lakh Crore in Odisha for New Smelter and Ferro-Alloys Plant

Published on

Vedanta Group chairman Anil Agarwal on Thursday announced that the company will make a massive investment of ₹1 lakh crore in Odisha to set up a 3 million tonne per annum aluminium smelter plant in Dhenkanal district and an ultra-modern ferro-alloys plant in Keonjhar district.

After a meeting with Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi at Lok Seva Bhawan, Agarwal told mediapersons that the proposed smelter project will commence within the next three to four months, provided the required land and all necessary statutory clearances are granted within that time.

He said this ambitious project will generate employment opportunities for around 40,000 people and will be one of the largest smelter units in the world. “If everything goes according to plan, we aim to complete the Dhenkanal project within three to three-and-a-half years,” Agarwal stated.

Massive boost from Odisha industrial investment Vedanta

According to the Chief Minister’s Office, Vedanta has also agreed to establish an advanced ferro-alloys plant in Keonjhar district with an estimated investment of ₹2,000 crore. This initiative is expected to strengthen Odisha’s position in the global metal value chain, further enhancing its reputation as a key hub for industrial and metallurgical development.

The chief minister appreciated Vedanta’s commitment to Odisha, stating that such large-scale investments would accelerate the state’s economic growth, create vast employment opportunities for the youth, and lay the foundation for Odisha’s transformation into a $500 billion economy by 2036. “This massive investment will be a game-changer for the bright future of Odisha,” the Chief Minister said.

Expansion of aluminium parks to drive industrial ecosystem

Vedanta also announced plans to set up two new aluminium parks, one near its existing aluminium plant in Jharsuguda and another at a location to be identified by the state government. These modern industrial parks will focus on producing high-grade aluminium alloys that will cater to sectors like aerospace, electric vehicles, and defence manufacturing.

The parks are expected to attract major downstream industries and investors, giving a significant push to the state’s MSME ecosystem. This will not only help create jobs but also ensure value addition within the state, turning Odisha into a major industrial hub in eastern India.

New opportunities under Odisha industrial investment Vedanta

The Vedanta Group had previously submitted a proposal to the state government to establish a six million tonne per annum alumina refinery plant in Rayagada district. The Sijimali mine will cater to the bauxite requirements of this new refinery.

On the topic of environmental and forest clearance for the Sijimali bauxite mine, Agarwal mentioned that Chief Minister Majhi had assured the company of full cooperation in conducting the mandatory public hearing. The central government has temporarily paused the diversion of forest land for the mine, following concerns over tribal rights and complaints from local communities.

Vedanta University project may find new home in Odisha

When asked about the long-pending Vedanta University project in Puri, Agarwal said, “Many states such as Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh are interested in hosting this project, but my heart remains in Odisha. We want to establish a world-class university here.

It is now up to the state government to select a suitable location, and we are open to any place other than Puri.” He further praised the Odisha chief minister for his progressive mindset, saying, “I have not seen a chief minister as forward-thinking and committed as him. His approach gives us immense confidence about the state’s future.”
