Viral Video: BMC Additional Commissioner Assaulted During Public Hearing

Published on

In a shocking incident that has triggered outrage across Bhubaneswar, BMC Additional Commissioner Ratnakar Sahu was physically assaulted inside his office on Monday during a public grievance hearing session. The attack, allegedly led by a local corporator and his associates, has prompted widespread protests by civic body staff and drawn sharp political reactions.

Attack During Office Hours, Dragged Outside by Mob

Sahu told media that around 11:30 AM, a group of five to six men including BMC Corporator Jiban Rout stormed into his chamber. “They questioned me over an alleged misbehavior with one Jaga Bhai. When I denied it, they started abusing, manhandling, and dragged me out of the office,” he said. The attackers allegedly attempted to forcibly take him away in their vehicle.

The incident sparked immediate backlash from BMC employees, who condemned the assault and suspended all work in protest. Workers are staging a dharna (sit-in protest), demanding immediate arrests of those involved.

Mayor Slams Attack, Calls It a Law and Order Breakdown

Bhubaneswar Mayor Sulochana Das called the assault “extremely unfortunate”, stating:

“Five to six miscreants forcibly entered the Additional Commissioner’s office, dragged him out, and attacked him. This reflects a complete collapse of law and order. Employees are on strike and will continue till the culprits are arrested.”

Political Uproar: Congress Blames BJP for ‘Jungle Raj’

The Congress party has used the incident to attack the BJP-led state government, alleging political involvement in the assault.
Congress leader BV Srinivas posted on X (formerly Twitter), accusing BJP leader Aparupa Raut of leading the attack.

“Beware, if any media calls this jungle raj, because the BJP is in power here,” he wrote.

Kharavela Nagar Police have launched a formal investigation. Officials are reviewing CCTV footage from surrounding areas to identify and apprehend the accused. Arrests are expected soon as pressure mounts from civil society and political leaders.
