President Droupadi Murmu today called upon young doctors to dedicate their skills to underserved rural and tribal areas, where quality healthcare remains out of reach for many. Speaking at the first convocation ceremony of AIIMS Gorakhpur, she emphasized the crucial role that doctors play not only in treating illnesses but in building a healthy and progressive society.
Empathy Key to Medical Practice, Says President
Addressing a gathering of graduating doctors, faculty, and dignitaries, President Murmu said:
“Doctors must understand the importance of empathy. They face many challenges, but compassion and communication are vital for healing and building trust with patients.”
She urged medical educators to create a holistic learning environment that emphasizes doctor-patient communication and emotional intelligence, alongside technical excellence.
AIIMS: Pillars of India’s Medical Excellence
The President praised the All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) as symbols of India’s medical capabilities, adding that these institutions instill hope in every patient who walks through their doors.
Highlighting India’s growing global presence in the health sector, she noted:
“Medical treatment in India is comparatively affordable, and this has led to a rise in medical tourism.”
Also addressing the ceremony, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said that health infrastructure in the state has seen major improvements in recent years.
He added that AIIMS Gorakhpur now serves not only local residents but also patients from neighboring Bihar and even Nepal, reflecting its growing importance as a regional healthcare hub.
Earlier in the day, President Murmu addressed the 11th convocation of the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) in Bareilly, further highlighting the importance of medical and veterinary sciences in national development.
