WearOS Smartwatches to Soon Get Earthquake Alerts: Here’s How Google’s System Works
In a significant step toward enhancing public safety, Google is expanding its Android Earthquake Alerts System to WearOS smartwatches. This means users of smartwatches powered by WearOS—such as Samsung Galaxy Watch, Fossil, and others—will soon receive earthquake alerts directly on their wrists, even if their phones aren’t nearby.
From Phones to Wearables: A Natural Evolution
Google initially launched its Android Earthquake Alerts System in 2020. This innovative system leverages data from millions of smartphones worldwide, using their built-in accelerometers to detect seismic activity. When a phone senses tremors, it sends data to Google’s servers, which analyze it for patterns. If an earthquake is confirmed, alerts are dispatched to nearby users—informing them of the magnitude, estimated epicentre, and a warning that shaking may occur.
Now, according to Google System Release Notes, this same functionality is being extended to WearOS devices. Although not officially announced yet, reports from Android Authority and an APK teardown indicate that the update is included in Google Play Services version 25.21 and is likely rolling out soon.
How Will Earthquake Alerts Work on Smartwatches?
The process is simple and impactful:
- Your WearOS smartwatch will buzz with a distinct alert.
- The alert will display key details: earthquake magnitude, estimated distance from the epicentre, and a warning of expected shaking.
- This is especially helpful in situations where your phone isn’t within reach—while running, cooking, or charging in another room.

While there’s no exact launch date yet, the backend infrastructure is already in place. Users should ensure that their WearOS devices are updated and that Google Play Services are on version 25.21 or higher.
