Six months after bidding farewell to professional cricket, Wriddhiman Saha, one of India’s finest wicketkeepers, is set to step into the coaching arena. The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) is considering the 40-year-old veteran to take over as head coach of Bengal’s U-23 team, marking a potential new chapter in his cricket journey.
Saha, who retired from first-class cricket in January this year after completing Bengal’s Ranji Trophy league stage, could join the state’s coaching setup alongside Laxmi Ratan Shukla, who will continue as head coach of the senior team, and Saurashis Lahiri, who will handle the U-19 squad.
“The CAB brass will finalise all team coaches next week. Wriddhi has already been approached, and a decision is likely soon,” a senior CAB official told PTI on condition of anonymity. “With 40 Tests under his belt, apart from Sourav Ganguly and Pankaj Roy, he’s one of Bengal’s biggest names. His experience at the highest level will benefit the next generation of cricketers.”
Saha’s Coaching Passion Already Well-Known
Saha, who already runs a chain of cricket coaching centres, has been described as a hands-on coach, especially with junior players. “He’s passionate about mentoring youngsters,” the official added. “His U-23 stint could be a stepping stone for bigger roles — perhaps in the IPL or at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.”
Breaking Tradition in Bengal Cricket
While it’s uncommon for Bengal players to be fast-tracked into coaching roles immediately after retirement, Saha’s stature in domestic and international cricket makes his case an exception. Until last season, the U-23 side was coached by Pranab Roy, son of the legendary Pankaj Roy.
Those familiar with Bengal cricket believe Saha is well-suited for coaching, thanks to his discipline, temperament, and technical insight — traits that defined his playing career.
If confirmed, the move would mark a significant development for Bengal cricket, blending veteran experience with youthful energy to guide the state’s emerging talents.
