Yellow Alert Issued for 11 Coastal Districts, Severe Heat and Sultry Weather

Published on

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for 11 coastal districts of Odisha, warning residents to brace for severe heat and sultry weather over the next three days. The affected districts include Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati.

Rising Temperatures and Humidity Expected

According to the IMD forecast, hot and humid conditions will prevail due to a combination of high temperatures and elevated atmospheric moisture. Daytime temperatures are predicted to rise by 2-3 degrees Celsius over the next two days, after which the temperature will likely stabilise. There is also a chance of thundershowers in some parts of the state, which may bring temporary relief from the intense heat.

Precautionary Measures for Residents

Health officials have urged residents to take necessary precautions to protect themselves from heat-related illnesses. Key recommendations include:

  • Avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun, especially during peak hours between 12 PM and 4 PM.
  • Staying well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water and consuming hydrating fruits such as watermelon, cucumber, and oranges.
  • Protecting skin by applying sunscreen with SPF 50+, carrying umbrellas, and wearing UV-protective sunglasses.

Stay Alert and Stay Safe

With the heatwave conditions expected to continue, the IMD and local authorities advise people to stay alert, especially vulnerable groups like the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions. Taking timely precautions can help minimise health risks associated with extreme heat and humidity.
