Zojila Tunnel: Around 70% work of Asia’s longest tunnel completed, Nitin Gadkari

Around 70% of the work on Asia’s longest tunnel, the Zojila Tunnel in Jammu and Kashmir, has been completed. The project, which will provide all-weather connection between Srinagar and Ladakh, is being built at a cost of over 5,500 crore rupees.

The Zojila Tunnel Project consists of the building of a tunnel longer than 13 kilometers and approach roads longer than 17 kilometers, for a total length of more than 30 kilometers. This was mentioned by Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari in response to supplementaries during question hour in the Lok Sabha today.

He stated that road development projects totaling two lakh crore are being implemented in Jammu and Kashmir. He stated that 105 tunnels are being developed in Jammu and Kashmir to increase connectivity.

The Minister stated that work on 22 tunnels between the Jammu and Kashmir regions has been finished, and the Border Road Organisation is building another 14 tunnels. Mr. Gadkari stated that the completion of these tunnels will reduce travel time from around nine hours to three and a half hours.

He also stated that 25 thousand kilometers of national highways will be converted from two to four lanes during the next two years.
