Cabinet Approves ₹8,307 Crore 6-Lane Bhubaneswar Bypass to Boost Connectivity in Odisha

Published on

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the construction of a 6-Lane Access-Controlled Capital Region Ring Road (Bhubaneswar Bypass) in Odisha. The greenfield project, to be developed under the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM), will span 110.875 km and cost ₹8,307.74 crore. The new corridor is designed to ease severe congestion between Rameshwar and Tangi on the current National Highway network, which passes through densely populated cities such as Khordha, Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.

The project aims to divert heavy commercial traffic from key urban areas, improving freight movement, reducing logistics costs and supporting economic development across the region.

6-Lane Bhubaneswar Bypass – Key Route Integration and Connectivity

The 6-lane Bhubaneswar bypass will connect with three major National Highways (NH-55, NH-57 and NH-655) and one State Highway (SH-65), ensuring smooth connectivity to key economic and logistics hubs in Odisha. The new road will also enhance multi-modal integration by linking 10 economic nodes, 4 social nodes and 5 logistics nodes. It will enable faster access to one major railway station, one airport, a proposed Multi-Modal Logistics Park (MMLP) and two major ports across the state.

Benefits for Freight and Regional Development

By re-routing heavy traffic away from urban centres, the project is expected to dramatically improve freight efficiency and ease traffic pressure on congested city roads. The bypass will make long-distance commercial travel faster and more cost-efficient, enhancing the state’s capacity to support industrial growth and trade expansion.
