PM Modi Meets Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Says Ties Making ‘Steady Progress’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Tuesday, signalling a potential thaw in relations between India and China. The prime minister stated that both countries have made “steady progress” in their diplomatic ties since his last meeting with President Xi Jinping in Kazan last year. In a post on X, he noted that India and China have been advancing relations “guided by respect for each other’s interests and sensitivities,” and added that he looks forward to his next meeting with President Xi during the upcoming SCO Summit in Tianjin.

During the meeting, Wang Yi delivered a message and official invitation from the Chinese President for Prime Minister Modi to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, scheduled to be held on August 31. Modi emphasized that stable and constructive ties between the two nations are crucial for regional and global peace.

In the PM Modi meets Chinese foreign minister meeting, top priorities included maintaining peace along the border and promoting a fair and mutually acceptable resolution of long-standing boundary issues. Wang Yi had earlier met with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, where matters related to disengagement, de-escalation and boundary delimitation were discussed.

Security and Counter-Terrorism Issues Raised

On Monday, the Chinese foreign minister also held discussions with External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar. The two leaders exchanged views on a wide range of bilateral, regional and international issues, while the Indian side raised serious concerns about terrorism, including cross-border terrorism. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, Wang Yi concurred that countering terrorism must remain a top priority for both sides.

Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to travel to China at the end of August for the SCO Summit in Tianjin, marking his first visit to the country since 2018. His last meeting with President Xi took place on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Kazan, and diplomatic observers view the upcoming summit as an important opportunity to sustain the momentum in bilateral ties.
