Pakistan Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan in Bangladesh: 4-Day Visit to Boost Trade, MoUs Likely

Dhaka: Pakistan Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan arrived in Bangladesh on Wednesday night for a four-day official visit (August 21–24), aimed at strengthening bilateral trade and enhancing economic cooperation, according to Bangladesh Sanghbad Sangstha (BSS).

Pakistan Commerce Minister in Bangladesh for Trade Talks

During his stay, Jam Kamal Khan is scheduled to sign four Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with Bangladeshi counterparts. The MoUs are expected to pave the way for expanded trade opportunities and cooperation across multiple sectors.

The minister will also hold meetings with senior government representatives and leaders of major business associations. His itinerary includes visits to Chattogram Port, a pharmaceutical manufacturing company, and a steel factory, reflecting the focus on industrial and trade linkages.

Pakistan Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar to Join in Dhaka

Adding further significance to the visit, Pakistan Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar will arrive in Dhaka on August 23 for a two-day stay. This marks the first bilateral visit by a Pakistani Foreign Minister to Bangladesh in three decades.

Ishaq Dar is expected to hold high-level talks with Bangladesh’s Foreign Adviser, Md Touhid Hossain, on August 24.

Bangladesh-Pakistan Relations See Fresh Momentum

The visits come against the backdrop of changing political dynamics in Bangladesh following the August 5, 2024 student-led uprising, which has led to Dhaka seeking fresh diplomatic engagements.

Pakistan has been pushing to rebuild ties with Bangladesh after decades of frosty relations. Earlier in April, Pakistan’s Foreign Secretary Amna Baloch visited Dhaka, signaling renewed efforts to revive stalled cooperation.

Bilateral Trade Prospects on the Agenda

Officials on both sides believe that upcoming trade agreements could unlock new economic opportunities for the two South Asian nations, especially in pharmaceuticals, textiles, and port logistics.
