Supreme Court Orders States to Submit Reports on Student Suicide Prevention and Mental Health

The Supreme Court of India has instructed all states and Union Territories to submit detailed reports within eight weeks regarding the enforcement of its suicide prevention and mental health guidelines in educational institutions. This directive comes amid rising cases of student suicides and is intended to strengthen the mental health framework in schools, colleges, and coaching centres across the country.

Supreme Court on Suicide Prevention: States Must File Compliance Reports

A bench led by Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta has demanded compliance affidavits from the Centre and state governments on the actions taken to safeguard student mental health. The Supreme Court directed that all states and Union Territories be made parties to the ongoing case and be given eight weeks to submit detailed responses before the next hearing in January 2026. The step underscores the judiciary’s growing concern over the mental health crisis among students and aims to ensure full accountability at all administrative levels.

Implementation of Uniform Mental Health Policy in Educational Institutions

The court reaffirmed its July 25 order, which required all educational institutions to follow a uniform mental health policy based on the ‘Ummeed’ draft guidelines, the ‘Manodarpan’ initiative, and the National Suicide Prevention Strategy. The policy should be reviewed yearly and displayed on official websites and notice boards to ensure transparency and easy access for students and parents.

Addressing the Legislative Gap in Suicide Prevention Framework

In its earlier ruling, the Supreme Court pointed out a major “legislative and regulatory vacuum” in India’s approach to suicide prevention. To address this issue, it introduced 15 interim guidelines that will remain effective until a comprehensive legal structure is enacted. These include compulsory registration of coaching institutes, student safety norms, and proper grievance redressal systems to help prevent tragic incidents related to academic pressure.

Strengthening Mental Health Support for Students Nationwide

Experts believe that the Supreme Court’s directions on suicide prevention will push institutions to adopt proactive mental health practices and ensure that emotional well-being becomes a core part of education. By making these policies mandatory and regularly reviewed, the court’s move is expected to create a safer and more supportive environment for students across India.
