New Delhi: The INS Sudarshini Lokayan 26 expedition commenced today as the Indian Navy’s sail training ship embarked on a landmark 10-month global voyage aimed at strengthening maritime cooperation and showcasing India’s seafaring heritage. The mission will span more than 22,000 nautical miles and include port calls across 13 countries, underscoring India’s growing maritime outreach.

The expedition reflects India’s civilisational philosophy of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,’ projecting traditional seamanship, cultural diplomacy, and commitment to international maritime collaboration.

Global Ports and Prestigious Tall-Ship Events

During Lokayan 26, INS Sudarshini will call at 18 ports worldwide. A major highlight of the deployment is the ship’s participation in two globally renowned tall-ship festivals—Escale à Sète in France and SAIL 250 in New York—where it will represent India’s enduring maritime legacy on prominent international platforms.

These events will provide global audiences with a glimpse of India’s nautical traditions and sailing excellence.

Training the Next Generation of Sailors

More than 200 trainees from the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard will undergo rigorous hands-on training during the expedition. The programme focuses on long-range ocean navigation, tall-ship handling, and operational coordination with foreign navies.

Officials said the mission is designed to sharpen professional skills while exposing trainees to diverse maritime environments and cultures.

Strengthening Maritime Partnerships

Beyond training, Lokayan 26 will serve as a platform for joint exercises, professional exchanges, and confidence-building interactions with host navies. These engagements align with India’s MAHASAGAR vision, which emphasises maritime security, cooperation, and sustainable growth in the Indo-Pacific and beyond.

Symbol of Naval Heritage and Goodwill

With over 140,000 nautical miles already sailed, INS Sudarshini stands as the Indian Navy’s second sail training vessel and a symbol of naval professionalism. Through Lokayan 26, the ship reinforces India’s image as a responsible maritime power while promoting goodwill, cultural exchange, and shared values across oceans.

The voyage marks another significant chapter in India’s efforts to blend tradition with modern maritime diplomacy on the global stage.
