BALASORE: The Balasore bus accident NH-16 claimed one life and left several pilgrims injured after a tragic road mishap near Bahanga Market under Khantapada police limits in Balasore on Tuesday morning. The accident occurred on National Highway-16 when a pilgrimage bus lost control and climbed onto a bridge, officials said.
WB Pilgrimage Bus Loses Control Near Bahanga Market
According to preliminary reports, the bus was travelling from West Bengal to Andhra Pradesh carrying around 50 pilgrims. The mishap reportedly took place in the early hours of the morning when the driver allegedly fell asleep at the wheel.
As a result, the bus veered off its path and mounted the bridge near Bahanga Market, creating panic among passengers.
Driver Dies, Passengers Injured
The impact of the crash caused the driver to fall off the bridge. He died on the spot due to severe injuries. Out of the approximately 50 passengers onboard, at least 14 sustained serious injuries in the accident.
Local residents rushed to the scene and immediately alerted emergency services. Ambulances were called in to evacuate the injured.
Injured Shifted to Khantapada CHC
The injured passengers were taken to Khantapada Community Health Centre, where they are currently undergoing treatment. Medical officials said the condition of some injured pilgrims remains serious, and they are being closely monitored.
Meanwhile, the bus remains precariously positioned, hanging dangerously on the bridge, raising safety concerns for traffic movement on the busy highway.
Police Begin Investigation: Balasore Bus Accident
Police from Khantapada have reached the accident site and initiated an investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the mishap. Traffic on the stretch was regulated to prevent further incidents, and efforts are underway to remove the damaged bus safely.
Authorities have urged drivers to exercise caution on highways, especially during long-distance night travel, to avoid fatigue-related accidents.
