Bhubaneswar: Dense fog in Odisha caused major disruption on Tuesday morning, blanketing several parts of the state including the Bhubaneswar–Cuttack twin city and sharply reducing visibility to as low as 50 metres in some areas. Poor visibility led to traffic slowdowns, as roads and junctions remained barely visible during early hours.

Commuters faced difficulties navigating city roads, particularly along highways and arterial routes, as vehicles were forced to move at reduced speeds amid near-zero visibility conditions.

Unusual Weather Pattern Observed

Meteorological officials noted that Odisha is currently experiencing a distinct weather pattern hot conditions during the day, cold nights, and dense fog at dawn. This combination has contributed to persistent fog formation, especially in the early morning hours.

According to the India Meteorological Department, the mercury is expected to rise by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius over the next three days. However, the cold conditions during nights and early mornings are likely to persist.

Night Temperatures Across Odisha

The night temperature in western Odisha is expected to remain relatively low. Forecasts indicate temperatures of around 15°C in western districts, dropping further to about 12°C in Phulbani and Rourkela, and nearly 13°C in Jharsuguda.

Several southern and northern districts including Nabarangpur, Koraput, Malkangiri, Sundargarh and Keonjhar are likely to record minimum temperatures of around 14°C. In contrast, most coastal Odisha districts are expected to maintain comparatively warmer night temperatures of 18°C or above.

Fog Likely to Persist in Mornings

Weather experts said the ongoing fog is being caused by the movement of slightly humid air over the region. The IMD has predicted that foggy conditions will continue to prevail during morning hours across many parts of Odisha for the next few days.

Authorities have advised commuters to remain cautious while travelling during early hours, use fog lights where necessary, and avoid speeding until visibility improves.

As the state transitions through fluctuating winter conditions, residents can expect clearer skies later in the day, even as mornings remain shrouded in fog.
