Bengaluru: The DK Shivakumar Karnataka Chief Minister era officially began on Wednesday as the Karnataka Congress chief took oath as the state’s new Chief Minister at a grand ceremony in Bengaluru. Alongside him, 13 legislators were inducted into the Cabinet, signaling the start of a new political chapter for the Congress government in the state.
The swearing-in ceremony was attended by senior Congress leaders, including Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi and outgoing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
DK Shivakumar Takes Charge of Karnataka
Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot administered the oath of office and secrecy at Lok Bhavan.
Shivakumar took the oath in the name of seer Gangadhar Ajja while holding a copy of the Constitution, a symbolic gesture that drew attention during the ceremony.
The 64-year-old Vokkaliga leader was elected leader of the Congress Legislature Party on May 30 following Siddaramaiah’s resignation. He previously served as Deputy Chief Minister in the outgoing government.
Senior Leaders Included in New Cabinet
Veteran Congress leader G Parameshwara, who is expected to serve as Deputy Chief Minister, also took oath. He invoked the name of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar during the ceremony.

What the New Government Signals
The composition of the Cabinet reflects a balance between experienced administrators and emerging leaders. Most ministers served in the previous Siddaramaiah government, ensuring continuity in governance.
The inclusion of Yathindra Siddaramaiah, son of Siddaramaiah, and former Assembly Speaker U.T. Khader has also drawn attention, indicating the Congress leadership’s effort to blend political experience with generational transition.
Grand Ceremony Showcases Congress Unity
The event witnessed the presence of chief ministers from Congress-ruled states, senior party office-bearers and leaders from across the country.
Religious heads from different communities, representatives of farmers, labourers, women’s groups, civic workers and pro-Kannada organisations also attended the ceremony.
Students from Shivakumar’s native village of Doddaalahalli in Kanakapura were among the special invitees, adding a personal touch to the occasion.
With Shivakumar now at the helm, political observers will closely watch how the new administration balances governance, development priorities and internal party expectations in the coming years.
