DUBAI: The ICC World Cup 2027 format has been officially unveiled, with the International Cricket Council (ICC) introducing a revamped competition structure for the 14-team tournament. Scheduled to be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, the expanded World Cup will feature three competitive stages before the knockout rounds, providing more matches and greater opportunities for participating nations.
The ICC said the new format has been designed to improve competition, increase meaningful contests and deliver a better viewing experience for cricket fans around the world.
ICC World Cup 2027 Format Introduces Three Competitive Stages
The tournament will begin with a Super Series, involving the three lowest-ranked qualified teams.
Round 1: Super Series
- The bottom three qualified teams will compete in a round-robin format.
- The team finishing at the top of the standings will qualify for the next stage.
- This format ensures every participating nation has a chance to progress through on-field performance.
Round 2: Group Stage
The second phase will feature 12 teams competing in 30 matches.
- Teams will be divided into two groups of six.
- Each group will play a round-robin league.
- The top three teams from each group will qualify.
- The next best-performing team across both groups will also advance, creating a seven-team Super 7 stage.
Super 7 to Decide Semi-Finalists
The final league stage, known as the Super 7, will consist of 21 round-robin matches.
The top four teams at the end of this phase will qualify for the semi-finals.
The knockout fixtures will be:
- 1st vs 4th
- 2nd vs 3rd
The winners of the two semi-finals will contest the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027 Final.
ICC World Cup 2027 Format Expands Global Competition
By increasing the number of participating teams from 10 to 14, the ICC aims to make the World Cup more inclusive while maintaining a competitive balance throughout the tournament.
The revised structure is expected to provide emerging cricket nations with more opportunities on the global stage while ensuring that stronger teams continue to compete in high-quality matches before reaching the knockout rounds. With South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia hosting the event, the 2027 edition is set to become one of the most expansive and competitive Cricket World Cups in the tournament’s history.
