PURI: The Rath Pratistha Puja 2026 was performed in Puri on Thursday, marking a major religious milestone ahead of the world-famous Jagannath Rath Yatra. The sacred ceremony consecrated the newly constructed wooden chariots of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra, preparing them for the annual journey from the Shree Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple.
The ritual, conducted by temple servitors through age-old Vedic traditions and prescribed temple customs, formally sanctifies the chariots before they carry the Holy Trinity during one of the world’s largest religious festivals.
Rath Pratistha Puja 2026 Sanctifies the Three Sacred Chariots
The Rath Pratistha Puja is regarded as one of the most important rituals before the Rath Yatra, as it invokes divine blessings upon the three chariots that will carry the sibling deities.
Every year, skilled artisans construct three new wooden chariots using traditional techniques and prescribed dimensions that have been preserved for centuries. Unlike most temple festivals where permanent chariots are reused, the Jagannath tradition requires fresh chariots to be built annually, symbolising renewal, purity and devotion.
Following the completion of the consecration ceremony, the chariots are considered spiritually ready for the sacred procession.
Three Chariots Ready for the Grand Procession
With the completion of the rituals, the majestic chariots now stand prepared on Bada Danda (Grand Road) for the annual Rath Yatra.
During the festival, Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra will travel from the Shree Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple, where they will remain for a specified period before returning to the main shrine.
Lakhs of devotees from across India and abroad have already begun arriving in Puri to witness the annual chariot festival, which is considered one of Hinduism’s most significant religious events.
