NEW DELHI: The Delhi Police facial recognition system has identified more than 2,500 individuals with criminal antecedents during security operations around the Jantar Mantar protest site, according to police sources. Authorities said the technology is being used as part of enhanced security measures to detect wanted persons and prevent anti-social elements from taking advantage of large public gatherings.
The deployment reflects the growing use of technology in crowd management and public safety, with police aiming to respond more quickly to potential security threats while monitoring high-profile demonstrations.
Delhi Police Facial Recognition System Linked to Criminal Database
According to police sources, Facial Recognition System (FRS) units have been installed at major entry and exit points around Jantar Mantar. The cameras are connected directly to the Delhi Police database, allowing captured facial images to be matched against existing criminal records in real time.
Officials said the system can identify wanted criminals, absconders, history-sheeters and individuals classified as “Bad Characters” in police records. If a match is detected, the concerned police unit is immediately alerted so that legal action can be initiated without delay.
