DUBAI: The Strait of Hormuz remains at the centre of diplomatic and security discussions after Iran said there has been no change in the status of the strategic waterway. Tehran confirmed that negotiations with Oman are continuing to develop arrangements aimed at ensuring the safe passage of commercial ships through one of the world’s busiest energy transit corridors.
The discussions come as geopolitical tensions persist in the Gulf, with competing positions over maritime security, shipping routes and regional influence adding fresh uncertainty for global trade and energy markets.
Strait of Hormuz Talks Focus on Maritime Safety
Iran’s Foreign Ministry said discussions with Oman have made progress and are centred on the management of commercial maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, which is bordered by both countries.
Tehran has maintained that, under its interim understanding with the United States, it currently oversees shipping arrangements in the strategic passage. Iranian officials have also objected to efforts to develop alternative shipping routes that bypass parts of the strait by moving traffic closer to Oman’s coastline.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints, carrying a significant share of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas exports. Any disruption in the waterway can have immediate implications for international energy supplies and shipping costs.
Regional Tensions Continue Over Security Operations
The United States military said its naval enforcement measures in the region remain in effect. According to US officials, several commercial vessels have been redirected during operations, while enforcement actions were taken against a number of ships as part of maritime security measures.
Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated support for continued US pressure on Iran over its nuclear programme. Ahead of his planned visit to Washington, Netanyahu said he expected to discuss future policy with US President Donald Trump, adding that he would first hear the American administration’s plans before offering his views.

The ongoing diplomatic engagement between Iran and Oman highlights efforts to maintain commercial navigation through the Strait of Hormuz despite broader regional tensions.
