New Delhi: Exiled Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen on Sunday strongly backed the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in India, saying equal laws for all citizens are essential to eliminate discrimination, particularly against women. Speaking at a press conference, she also called for similar legal reforms in Bangladesh and Pakistan.

Nasreen argued that legal equality is fundamental to a modern society and said personal laws should not result in unequal treatment of citizens.

Addressing reporters, Nasreen said many developed nations already follow legal systems similar to a Uniform Civil Code.

She asserted that India, Bangladesh and Pakistan should adopt equal civil laws applicable to all citizens, irrespective of religion or community.

According to Nasreen, women continue to face discrimination in several areas governed by personal laws, and a Uniform Civil Code could help reduce such inequalities by ensuring equal legal rights.

Calls for Similar Reforms in Bangladesh and Pakistan

Nasreen extended her appeal beyond India, saying neighbouring Bangladesh and Pakistan should also consider introducing a Uniform Civil Code.

She maintained that equal laws for every citizen would promote fairness and strengthen the protection of women’s rights across South Asia.
