Devotees traditionally observe fasting and prayers before participating in celebrations marking Krishna’s birth.

Special arrangements have been made at Puri Srimandir for the Janmashtami rituals.

Public darshan at the temple will remain closed from 7 pm until midnight. The restriction will begin after the evening Dhupa Bhoga Chheka and continue until the completion of the Shri Krishna Janma ritual.

The restricted darshan has been put in place to facilitate the special ceremonies associated with Lord Krishna’s birth and ensure that the rituals are conducted smoothly.

Why Janmashtami Is Celebrated

Mathura is traditionally regarded as Krishna’s birthplace, while Vrindavan is closely associated with his childhood. Both places witness large-scale celebrations during Janmashtami, attracting devotees from different parts of the country.

Dahi Handi and Krishna’s Childhood Stories

Janmashtami celebrations in several parts of India also include Dahi Handi, a tradition associated with stories of Krishna’s childhood and his fondness for butter and curd.

During the event, participants form human pyramids to reach and break an earthen pot filled with curd and other milk products.

The tradition is linked to popular stories of young Krishna taking butter and curd from neighbouring homes. According to these stories, residents would hang pots containing milk products at a height to prevent Krishna from reaching them.
