Thiruvananthapuram: West Indies opener John Campbell described his team’s 295/7 against India as a decent total but admitted they were around 15 to 20 runs short of what could have been a stronger score in the first ODI at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram.
Campbell played an important role at the top of the order, scoring 62 runs from 60 balls with six fours and three sixes. He shared a 135-run opening partnership with Justin Greaves, who registered his maiden ODI century with 101 off 108 balls.
John Campbell Reflects on West Indies 295
Campbell said Greaves’ positive start allowed him to focus on playing a supporting role during their opening partnership.
Greaves struck 12 boundaries during his century and continued batting despite experiencing shin cramps. The pair provided West Indies with a strong foundation before India fought back during the later stages of the innings.
Campbell felt the pitch became more challenging for stroke-making as the innings progressed.
West Indies Batter Highlights Pitch Conditions
According to Campbell, the ball became softer later in the innings, making it harder for batters to score freely. As a result, West Indies finished at 295/7, five runs short of the 300-run mark.
The opener also reflected on his previous Test experience in New Delhi, saying that outing had helped him feel comfortable while batting in Thiruvananthapuram.
Campbell said the ball was coming onto the bat well and that he tried to remain focused and get into strong positions to play his shots.
West Indies Looked to Block Out Off-Field Distractions
Campbell also spoke about the team’s approach to matters away from the cricket field. His comments came after Cricket West Indies (CWI) announced a 25% reduction in central contract payments.
The opener said the players chose to focus on their cricket and on producing a performance that would make people back home proud.
With West Indies setting India a target of 296, their innings was built around the century from Greaves and Campbell’s aggressive contribution at the top of the order.
