Bhubaneswar: Odisha has stepped up cyclone preparedness as a developing weather system over the Bay of Bengal threatens to bring heavy rainfall and strong winds to several districts. Red warnings have been reported for vulnerable areas, while fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea as conditions are expected to deteriorate.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) expects the system to intensify over the coming days and move towards the north Andhra Pradesh and adjoining southern Odisha coast. Its precise track and landfall location remain uncertain.
The Odisha government has placed emergency response teams on standby and directed district administrations to strengthen their preparations.
Cyclone Arnab Update: Bay of Bengal System May Intensify
The weather system over the Bay of Bengal is expected to strengthen progressively, potentially becoming a cyclonic storm named Arnab around October 26.
According to forecasts reported on October 24, the system may develop into a depression, intensify into a deep depression and subsequently become a cyclonic storm.
It is expected to move west-northwestwards towards the north Andhra Pradesh and adjoining southern Odisha coast around October 28.
Wind speeds over parts of the Bay of Bengal could reach 70–80 kmph, with gusts of up to 90 kmph, during the system’s development. The final intensity and wind speeds near the coast will depend on how the system evolves.
Red Warning for Odisha Districts
The developing system has prompted warnings for several districts in Odisha, particularly in the southern and coastal regions.
Reports published on October 24 identified Puri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri among the districts under a red warning for intense rainfall.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast in parts of Odisha from October 27, with isolated areas potentially receiving extremely heavy rainfall on October 28 and 29.
Residents should follow the latest IMD district-wise bulletins because warning levels and affected districts may change as the system develops.
Fishermen Prohibited from Venturing into the Sea
Authorities have advised fishermen not to venture into the sea as marine conditions are expected to worsen.
The Bay of Bengal may experience rough to very rough seas as the weather system strengthens and moves towards the coast. Fishermen already at sea should follow official instructions and return to shore when directed by the authorities.
Fishing communities, boat operators and coastal residents should monitor local announcements and avoid taking unnecessary risks during the warning period.
Odisha Government Strengthens Disaster Preparedness
The Odisha government has intensified preparations to deal with possible heavy rainfall, flooding and wind-related damage.
According to reports, government employees‘ holidays have been cancelled and disaster response teams have been placed on standby.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) and other emergency services are being kept ready for deployment if required.
District administrations have also been instructed to prepare for potential emergencies, including the need to move people from vulnerable and low-lying areas to safer locations.

Schools and Colleges to Remain Closed for Two Days
Educational institutions in selected districts are reported to be facing a two-day closure because of the anticipated weather conditions.
