Wellington: India defeated New Zealand by four runs under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method in a rain-affected second ODI at Hnry Stadium in Wellington on Saturday. The victory gave India a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.

Chasing a modest target of 135, India were struggling at 113/7 after 26 overs when persistent rain forced the match to end. However, India were four runs ahead of the DLS par score of 109 and were declared winners.

The match had already been reduced to 47 overs per side following rain delays.

Gurnoor Brar Leads India’s Bowling Attack

After winning the toss, India put New Zealand into bat and their bowlers delivered another impressive performance.

New Zealand were bowled out for just 134 in 41 overs. Gurnoor Brar was the standout performer, taking four wickets for 30 runs in his 10 overs.

Anshul Kamboj, Auqib Nabi and Axar Patel picked up two wickets each.

Daryl Mitchell was the top scorer for New Zealand with 55 runs off 104 balls. Mitchell tried to rebuild the innings after early wickets, while captain Mitchell Santner contributed 31 runs.

However, regular wickets prevented the hosts from building a competitive total.

India Lose Early Wickets in 135-Run Chase

India’s chase got off to a disappointing start as Shubman Gill was dismissed for a golden duck.

Virat Kohli also failed to make a significant contribution, scoring just seven runs before being caught by Will Young off Jacob Duffy.

Rohit Sharma scored 23 runs, while Shreyas Iyer added 30 runs from 46 deliveries.

New Zealand’s bowlers continued to put pressure on the Indian batting line-up. Kyle Jamieson and Jacob Duffy claimed three wickets each.

India slipped to 47/4 before Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul attempted to stabilise the innings.

KL Rahul Remains Unbeaten as Rain Stops Play

Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul added a valuable partnership to keep India in the contest.

Iyer scored 30 before being dismissed by Kyle Jamieson. Rahul remained unbeaten on 26 when rain interrupted the match.

India eventually reached 113/7 in 26 overs. With the DLS par score standing at 109, the visitors were four runs ahead and secured the victory.

India Move 2-0 Ahead in the Series

The second consecutive victory strengthens India’s position in the five-match ODI series.

India had also won the opening match by five wickets under the DLS method after bowling New Zealand out for 185 in Auckland.

The Wellington match, however, exposed concerns in India’s batting line-up, particularly after early dismissals of Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli.

India’s bowling unit continued to impress, with Gurnoor Brar producing a match-winning performance.
