World Radio Day 2023: World Radio Day is celebrated on February 13 every year to remember the important role that radio plays in our daily lives. World Radio Day purposes to raise public awareness of the importance of radio and encourage its use to provide access to information to people and improve international cooperation between broadcasters.

Theme of World Radio Day 2023


In 2023, the theme of World Radio Day is “Radio and Peace” which aims to focus on the importance of independent radio in promoting peace and preventing conflict. The theme of World Radio Day changes each year and is designed to focus on specific aspects of radio’s role in society.

World Radio Day: History


The day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012, and its history can be traced back to the first International Radio Conference in Geneva in 1974. February 13 was chosen as World Radio Day because it was the founding day of the Unite Nations Radio in 1946.

The Radio was invented in 1895 by Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi. He is credited with being the first to develop a practical and successful system of wireless communication, which laid the foundation for the widespread use of radio technology.


Radio quickly became one of the most important forms of communication of the 20th century, revolutionizing the way people received and shared information.


Radio broadcasting became an important source of news, entertainment, and educational content, connecting communities and promoting understanding across borders.


Radio Plays a huge role in natural disasters, particularly cyclones, earthquakes, landslides, etc when all mode of communication fails.
Radio continues to play a significant role in our lives today, serving as a huge source of information and entertainment.

PM greets all radio listeners on World Radio Day 2023

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has greeted all radio listeners, RJs and all others associated with the broadcasting eco-system on the occasion of World Radio Day.

Shri Modi has also urged citizens to share their inputs for Mann Ki Baat programme on the 26th February, 2023.

In a tweets, the Prime Minister said;

“Greetings to all radio listeners, RJs and all others associated with the broadcasting eco-system on the special occasion of World Radio Day. May the radio keep brightening lives through innovative programmes and showcasing human creativity.”

Sudarsan Pattnaik on World Radio Day

World famous sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik paid a tribute to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s monthly radio programme ‘Mann Ki Baat’ on the occasion of World Radio Day at the Puri beach in Odisha.
