ISRO: Successful completion of 1000-hour life test 300 milli Newton stationary plasma thruster

Published on

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has reported the successful completion of a 1,000-hour life test on its 300 Milli Newton Stationary Plasma Thruster, which is designed for use in satellite electric propulsion systems.

According to ISRO, the life test was carried out at full power of 5.4 kilowatts in a laboratory that simulates vacuum conditions in space, and the erosion of the electrode liners was frequently monitored. According to ISRO, this information would play a significant role in satellite orbit control.

The Electric Propulsion System is planned to replace the chemical propulsion system in future space agency satellites, clearing the way for communication satellites that rely solely on electric propulsion systems for orbit boosting and station keeping.

The induction of these thrusters will result in significant mass savings, allowing for increased transponder capacity in communication satellites.
